When Judgement Hits Home

Hope Beyond Judgement

In the final sermon of the series, we looked at Amos 9 to see the climax of the visions and the hope beyond. Amos’ warnings to Israel remind us of the shaking of God’s final judgement to come. The final vision is depicted as a devastating, inescapable earthquake that instantly destroys Israel’s false worship from top to bottom. We also saw how everyone faces the sifting of God’s judgement; the Israelites’ special status as God’s covenant people would not exempt them. Yet, the ending verses of the book provide a wonderful promise of hope. The Day of the Lord will be both a day of judgement and salvation - a day of restoration through judgement. The book ends with a picture of a restored relationship where God’s faithfulness triumphs and His grace overshadows judgment, shown through a united kingdom, overflowing blessing, and eternal security. Jesus Christ is the Davidic King who brings this great restoration for Israel and all nations. On the cross, Jesus bore the final judgment for us, allowing all who trust in Him to be gathered again and experience the full blessing of salvation. As we await Christ’s return and the final judgment, let us not grow complacent but urgently proclaim the message of salvation through judgment.
