We continued our sermon series in Amos 5:1-17, being reminded that God sees beyond appearances and knows what goes on within our hearts. We saw how God calls us to respond in repentance and to truly seek Him before it is too late. As Amos continues to pull back the curtain exposing Israel’s sin, he delivers a third climactic judgement speech. Amos weeps and proclaims a lament as if Israel were already dead. While recounting the Lord’s just verdict against Israel’s injustice, Amos pleads with them to seek the Lord and to seek good. History shows us that all Amos said came true - Israel did not repent, God’s patience ran out, and they were destroyed. Yet, God preserved a remnant that would ultimately lead to Jesus. Jesus is the perfect remnant who perfectly sought, loved, and obeyed the Lord. By taking the judgement we deserved, Jesus gave us the hope of becoming His remnant people who escape God’s wrath. With certainty of Christ’s return and the unquenchable fire of judgement, let us mourn and plead for those who have yet to know Him; and let us seek the Lord and pursue good while we still can.
