On Sunday, we looked at Amos 5:18-6:14 to see the prophet’s two woes of accusation against sinful Israel and the consequences they would face. The complacency of God’s people in Amos’ day required an external word from God to awaken them. Israel’s complacent living was rooted in pride and led to severe consequences. Because they overlooked justice and righteousness, Israel would be unexpectedly caught in the dark judgement of the Lord’s day. They corrupted justice and boasted in their own strength; their leaders were violent, uncaring, and indulgent. As a result, God swore that no one would be exempt from His judgement and that there would be real fear of the Lord. Centuries later, the New Testament reveals a righteous and humble King who left the glories of heaven and dwelt among us, who cared for the sick, weak, and needy. Jesus Christ is the righteous and humble King whose greatest act of justice was displayed on the cross as He bore the punishment for our sin. As we await the coming day of the Lord, let us turn - and keep turning - to King Jesus for rescue and be found in the light of His salvation.
